The Tafelberg is the most iconic mountain in Curacao!

The Tafelberg mesa is in southeastern Curaçao, near the Santa Barbara beach. It is 196.1 meters (643 ft) high, making it the fourth-highest point on Curaçao. The earliest written reference to the Santa Barbara plantation, where the Tafelberg is situated, and covers an area of about 1200 hectares, dates to the 16th century.
This amazing formation is in the premises of Santa Barbara Plantation. “It stands out rather distinctively amid the mostly flat surroundings around Spanish Waters Bay in southeastern Curacao, a jagged peak rising steeply to one side giving way to a flat plateau on the other.”

Tafelberg has two opened hiking trails that submit the mountain, longest walk starts at RCC shop at the gate of Santa Barbara Plantation all the way to the far east of the north face 2.5 miles/4 Km approximate distance; another trail to the west end of the wall 1.8 miles/2.8 Km approximate distance, an steep terrain section of about 30 minutes to reach the wall base, for those that wants to skip the approaching section to the skirt of the mountain, other means of transportation is available (bicycles, car ride).

The vegetation of the area is sparse, owing to the endemic lack of water. For first time visitors is highly recommended to get a guided trip.

Hikers must plan a full day journey; starting early morning also helps avoiding sun heat. Full day hiking cost US$65 for groups more than two people or US$125 for a solo hiker.

Climbing at Tafelberg

The north face wall of Tafelberg has the most amazing rock climbing in the island; exhibiting a quality solid limestone and clean wall of around 1.7 Km wide; routes are up to 50 meters height; wall is shaded for the most part of the day and wind blows constantly creating a nice cooler temperature for climbing.

 The approach to the walls is between 30 to 60 minutes hike from the beginning of the trail; transportation means are available from entrance gate to the trail head; There are 26 sport routes from 5.7 to 5.12C and 1 trad climb 5.7 set up; RCC is working to equip up to 500 more routes in 2021.

Climbing trips are available for newcomers or those who wants to hike and climb with an experience guide. Belaying partners are also available for experienced climbers travelling alone. Full day guided climbing at Tafelberg cost US$85 for groups more than two people or US$125 for a solo climber.
